ingredients to prepare oats upma:


Oats - 1 cup
Onion - 1 no medium size
Carrot - 1 no
Beans - 6 - 8 no
Green Peas - 1/4 cup
Mustard - 1 tsp
Urad Dal(whole, white) - 1 tsp
Dry Red Chilly - 2 - 3 no
Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
Turmeric Powder - 1/4 tsp
Oil - 2 tsp
Salt - as per taste

Preparation to prepare oats upma:


    Dry roast the oats in a kadai for about 5 minutes in medium flame until the aroma rises from the oats.
    Wash and chop the carrots and beans into small pieces.
    Chop the onions into thin slices.

Method

    Heat oil in a kadai.
    Add the mustard when oil is hot, when mustard splutters, reduce the flame add the urad dal and fry until golden brown.
    Next add the onion and saute it turns translucent.
    Add the red chilly, turmeric powder, curry leaves, and roast in medium flame.
    Add the chopped carrot, beans and green peas and saute everything and cook until the vegetables are 1/2 cooked.
    Now add 1 1/4 cups of water, salt and allow the water to boil.
    When the water starts to boil add the roasted oats and mix well.
    Oats will absorb the water and will get cooked. In medium flame saute until all water is evaporated and oats is no longer sticky.
    Serve hot with chutney, pickle or as is like me.

Notes


    Roasting the oats brings out the flavor and prevents oats from being sticky.
    You can sprinkle some lemon juice when the upma is done to give a lemony twist.
    Do not allow the temper items to be over roasted, it spoils the taste of the upma.
    The vegetables should be slightly crunchy for this type of upma.

Ingredients to prepare bread upma:


Bread - 10 slices
Tomatoes - 2
Tomato ketchup - 2 tblsp
Onion - 2
Spring onion (chopped) - 1/2 cup
Chilly powder - 2 tsp
Garam masala - 1/2 tsp
Ginger garlic paste - 1/2 tblsp
Lime juice - 1/2 tsp
Salt - for taste

Method to prepare bread upma:


Dice the bread slices into medium sized cubes. Saute it on a flat pan by adding some ghee until the bread gets roasted to light brown.

Chop onions finely and keep it aside.

Puree the tomatoes.

Take a pan and add few tsps of oil. Drop in the chopped onions and fry until golden brown. Add the tomato puree, tomato ketchup, chilly powder, garam masala and salt to it and allow it to boil for a while. Simmer the stove and add the lemon juice to it and mix well.

Now toss in the roasted bread squares and give a quick stir. Once the bread gets coated with the gravy, switch off the flame and sprinkle chopped spring onions.

Tips:

Choose sandwich or salted bread to make this.

You can add chopped bell peppers(capsicum) along with onion and saute it too.

Grated carrots can make a great addition to the dish as well.

Sprinkle some coriander leaves if you don't find spring onions

semiya Upma is a common South Indian breakfast dish. Here is the recipe for this simplest break fast  that is semiya upma.

Ingredients to prepare semiya upma:


    Vermicelli – 1 cup (small thin)

    Oil – 2 tsp

    Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

    Split urad dal – 1 tsp

    Channa dal – 1 tsp

    Curry leaves – a few

    Asafoetida – a pinch

    Green chillies – 3 (slit lengthwise

    Ginger – 1 tsp (grated)

    Onions – 1/2 cup (finely chopped)

    Salt – to taste

    Carrot (small size) – 1 (finely chopped) (optional)

    Beans – 10 (finely chopped) (optional)

    Peas – 1/4 cup (I ve used frozen peas) (optional)

    Water – 1 3/4 cup (1 1/2 cup without vegetables)

    Ghee 1 tsp

Method of Preparation for semiya upma:


In a wide vessel, add a tsp of ghee and toss the vermicelli in a medium flame.

    After 2 minutes, remove it from the heat before the color changes.

    Transfer them to a plate and in the same pan, in medium heat, add oil and add the mustard seeds.

    When the mustard seeds starts to splutter, add the asafoetida followed by the curry leaves, channa dal and split urad dal.

    When they turn golden brown, add the green chillies followed by the grated ginger and chopped oinions.

    Fry till the onions become translucent and add all the vegetables.

    Add some salt and add 1 3/4 cup of water and cover it with a lid.

    When the veggies are 3/4th done, add the vermicelli and mix well.

    When all the water gets evaporated, cover the lid and keep it in simmer flame for 5 to 10 minutes or until the vermicelli/semiya  becomes soft. that your simaya upma.

    Serve hot with sugar, coconut chutney or even pickle.

Note when your preparing semiya upma:


    Since I am adding around 1 1/4 cup of veggies, I add 1/4 cup extra water.

    Upma should be removed from the heat before it gets mushy.

    For semiya upma, if you add little extra oil, it will be seen more after it is done.

Heat a on a medium flame and roast the Rava / Sooji until the rava becomes to light brown color and keep aside
step2:Heat the oil in a another pan and add the mustard , cumin seeds,curry leaves and wait until the mustard seeds  spluttering stops.
step3:add channa & urad  to it and fry till they turn red.
step4:after that add chopped  green chillies,chopped Onion and fry till the onion become soft and light brown color
step5: Add the tomatoes and cook till soft and add the salt ,chopped coriander leaves and steamed vegetables .
step6:add 2 cups of water to above mixture and let it water boil.
step7:Add the roasted Rava / Sooji and stirring constantly to prevent any lumps from forming till it becomes little thick.
step8:in low flam cook the upma recipe for 5-10min until it becomes thick porridge and atfer that remove from flam and serve hot with any of your favorate chetney or pickle.

to prepare upma recipe you need the below ingredients:


*1(100gm) cup Rava / Sooji

*1 midium chopped Onion

*2 medium tomatoes chopped

*2 green chillies chopped

*1/2 teaspoon mustard seeds

*1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds

*1 teaspoon  Urad Dal

*1 teaspoon  Channa Dal

*2 tablespoons Oil

*Few curry leaves

*chopped coriander leaves

*2 cups of water

step4:after that add chopped  green chillies,chopped Onion and fry till the onion become soft and light brown color

step5: Add the tomatoes and cook till soft and add the salt and chopped coriander leaves.

step6:add 2 cups of water to above mixture and let it water boil.

step7:Add the roasted Rava / Sooji and stirring constantly to prevent any lumps from forming till it becomes little thick.

step8:in low flam cook the upma recipe for 5-10min until it becomes thick porridge and atfer that remove from flam and serve hot with any of your favorate chetney or pickle.
